Four jails of Haryana state have been selected for the second phase of Prison Radio in the state.

Four jails of Haryana state have been selected for the second phase of Prison Radio in the state. These are District Jail Rohtak, Bhondsi District Jail (Gurugram), Central Jail Hisar and District Jail, Karnal.

  • Chandigarh March 18: Four jails of Haryana state have been selected for the second phase of Prison Radio in the state. These are District Jail Rohtak, Bhondsi District Jail (Gurugram), Central Jail Hisar and District Jail, Karnal.  For this, 26 inmates have been trained during the Radio Presentation Skill Programme conceptualised and executed by Prison Reformer Vartika Nanda.  These inmates include five women and one transgender.
  • Sharing more details Director General Prisons Shri K Selvaraj said that these inmates will prepare the radio programmes themselves and run these on Jail Radio, meant only for the inmates. The Jail Radio will be only for jail inmates and its range would be limited to the prison premises only.
  • He said that the training programme concluded at Bhondsi District Jail Gurugram. The concluding programme was presided over by Director General Prisons Sh. K Selvaraj. Superintendents of all the four jails including Shri Sunil Sangwan, Sh. Harinder Singh, Sh. Deepak Sharma and Sh. Amit Kumar shared their thoughts during the program.
  • Sh. K Selvaraj said that these four jails will also introduce their prison radios soon. He shared that the launch of radios in the other three jails of Haryana have yielded positive results.
  • Haryana had launched its first prison radio in District Jail Panipat on January 16 this year. It was inaugurated by Haryana Minister for Prisons Shri Ranjit Singh in presence of ACS Home Shri Rajeev Arora and DG Prisons Shri K. Selvaraj.
  • These prison radios are the brainchild of prison reformer Vartika Nanda. She is the founder of ‘Tinka Tinka movement’ on prison reforms. She heads the Department of Journalism in Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. She said that now the jail inmates have been selected after taking auditions and have been trained to run the Jail Radio. Initially, this Jail Radio will be run on trial in all four jail premises and then will be inaugurated for broadcast.
  • Haryana has 19 jails and the state is planning to have Jail radios for all of them.
