Buddha Purnima is celebrated on the birthday of Gautam Buddha. It is the Buddhist festival and holiday which is mostly celebrated in East Asia. It commemorates the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Gautama Buddha and the founder of Buddhism. It is celebrated as Vesak in South and Southeast Asia, which places have a greater emphasis on the enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Gautama Buddha was born on c.563-480 BCE in Lumbini as given in the Theravada Tripitaka scriptures. Lumbini is modern-day Nepal and raised in the Shakya capital of Kapilvastu, Nepal.
Although, the exact dates of Buddha’s birthday is based on the Asian lunisolar calendars. The date for the celebration of Buddha’s birthday may vary from year to year according to the Western Gregorian calendar, but mostly it falls in the month of April or May.
This year Buddha Purnima is going to celebrate on 16 May.
